The background

We provided masterplanning services proposing twenty-eight residential units, five delivered through the conversion of three category B listed buildings and twenty-three through the addition of two new contemporary pavilions within the original landscaped garden grounds.

The design approach

Respectful to its place in local history as a former country house built in 19th century Neo-Jacobean style, the Torwood restoration project received the highest degree of combined expertise from Oberlanders’ residential and conservation teams.

The works faithfully retained and restored original features and provided a new lease of life, with adjustments to the layouts to suit the demands of modern living. In the original villa, Torwood House, now divided into two units, the fabric has been brought in line with current technical guidance, including thermal upgrades and a new contemporary extension.

The original buildings required careful refurbishment to the highest degree, with specialist craftsmen commissioned, from stonemasons faithfully restoring and repairing intricate detailing to joiners fabricating and refurbishing timber windows.  Specialist roofers replicated historic lead detailing and reused the existing slate, while plasterers reinstated and repaired historic ceiling mouldings.

Alongside Torwood House, the two new distinctly contemporary blocks adopt a palette of materials from the existing buildings, narrating the evolution of the site.
