One of Oberlanders’ longest serving members of staff, Charles Redmond, today retires from the Practice after 42 years of service.
Charles leaves his role as Senior Associate and Principal Design Lead, after a career of outstanding commitment and service.
Not long after the late Jack Oberlander and David Lawson started Oberlanders Architects in 1983, a youthful and energetic Charles joined the team, no doubt resplendent in his mandatory tie.
After a short stint away in the late 1980s, Charles saw the light and returned to Oberlanders where he has remained ever since, having a guiding hand in almost every major project the Practice has delivered.

Charles was part of the team who worked on the award-winning St Andrew’s Hospice in Airdrie, which received an RSA Gold Medal and which was later extended by the practice.
Charles also worked extensively on projects at Redford Barracks, Pentlands Science Park and the Royal Blind School and in recent years has been instrumental in the delivery of many of our healthcare projects, as well as the University of Edinburgh's Institute of Genetics and Cancer and the James Hutton Institute crop research facilities.

The Institute of Genetics and Cancer
Charles has led Oberlanders’ delivery of the CDM Principal Designer role since its’ inception in 2015 and has been an active part of our working group overseeing the implementation of the Building Safety Act and the role of Building Regulations Principal Designer on our projects in England.
Charles’ latest role has been as CDM lead on ‘Fabrica’ which will become one of Oxford’s largest commercial life sciences buildings constructed to date.

An example of Charles' artistic talents
Colleagues recognise Charles’ tenacity, persistence, directness and kindness, something he conveyed with beautiful handmade, hand printed Christmas cards gifted each and every year.

A recent toast to retirement
Charles, you can be proud of your many years of loyal, dedicated service, commitment to the practice, and the wonderful legacy and influence you have created. It has been an absolute privilege to work with you and learn from you over the years. Your wisdom, experience, kindness and support are going to be missed by us all. Enjoy your well-deserved retirement and thank you from us all.
