ECRC (Edinburgh Cancer Research Centre) Western General, Edinburgh
The Cancer Research UK Edinburgh Centre (ECRC) brings together cancer scientists and clinicians from across the University of Edinburgh, delivering outstanding cancer research and improved patient care. The University commissioned Oberlanders Architects to carry out refurbishment of the building to improve the facilities and to better integrate with the IGMM Translational Research Facility Refurbishment. The £1.1m refurbishment of 800m2 of ECRC included new wet laboratory and research space for histopathology and other services, relocation of support space, offices and meeting rooms.
The project was phased and carried out in a ‘live’ working environment. Coordination of replacement and works to the existing mechanical and electrical services was challenging, the team met regularly with the occupiers to coordinate the work. The successfully completed project has provided the University with the facilities needed to continue to develop new therapies.
