Falls of Shin, Scottish Highlands
The Falls of Shin Visitor Centre is a community owned café, gift shop and event hub located by the well known salmon leap waterfall on the river Shin.
Designed by Catriona Hill, the form of the building is loosely based on the theme of a leaping salmon with a playful flicked tail forming the entrance portal, a douglas fir logia forming the body and the larch clad building positioned at the head.
The serrated edges of the building gesture towards gills, letting the public flow too and from the plaza whilst staff move in and out of the service areas on the opposite side of the building.
The furthest most point in the head of the building is a circular rooflight, which reflects over the polished concrete floor and forms the eye.
In the centre of the logia a grass plaza forms the centre point of the venue and provides a place for all sorts of community events from pipe band displays to Christmas fairs.
A short film celebrating the legacy of the project has been commissioned by the Kyle of Sutherland Development Trust and can be found here.
