University of Edinburgh Systems Medicine Project, Western General Hospital, Edinburgh
Oberlanders have been appointed by the University of Edinburgh to undertake a new £6.8m research laboratory building at the Western General Hospital in Edinburgh. Oberlanders previously prepared the feasibility study for the project in 2009. The site is prominently located on the east side of the hospital campus overlooking the grounds of Fettes College, and with stunning views to the Edinburgh skyline. The new building links three existing Medical Research Council, University and Cancer Research laboratory buildings to form a new world class research institute. The project includes 2000sq.m of gross additional floor space providing dry-lab computational research space as well as seminar/lecture facilities and cafe. The building is designed to provide a link structure connecting all three existing buildings, with a central atrium space as well as a new iconic frontage as seen from the east side of the hospital site. Design work on the project is set to commence in January 2011 with works scheduled to commence on site during 2012.
