St Andrew's Hospice and Convent, Airdrie Lanarkshire
The award winning St Andrew’s hospice reflects the understated approach to Oberlanders design. The ten bed hospice and 20 bed geriatric unit was designed on a living room theme in which four bed wards are linked by day rooms opening onto a central courtyard.
The adjoining convent, chapel and hall are also linked to the courtyard and the result is a hospital building which is elegant and homely with an intimate and domestic scale.
The building was awarded the Gold Medal for Architecture by the Royal Scottish Academy in 1987 and the Regeneration of Scotland Award in1988. Since the opening Oberlanders have remained involved with the hospice and carried out several refurbishments and extensions to improve the facilities.
