Stewart's Melville College Swimming Pool, Edinburgh
Located in the grounds of the Grade A Listed Daniel Stewart’s College, This 25m swimming pool addresses the main entrance to the school off Ravelston Terrace. The sinuous roof rises towards the Old College, with a single slender column before a glazed corner presents an open gesture to the traditional heart of the school.
The overhanging roof provides solar shading to the southern elevation. Internally the steel framed structure is expressed with the resulting free standing diaphragm walls being used for distribution of the warm air. Consequently the pool hall is kept clear of clutter allowing the structure and glass to be expressed as pure elements.
Completed in 1999 to a cost of £1M.
