Lawson House, Ravelston Dykes, Edinburgh
Conceived as part of a comprehensive remodelling of a 1970’s family home, the extension to 95 Ravelston Dykes in Edinburgh forms a contemporary Dining Room as the centrepiece of the public rooms of the house.
The form is a simple 3.5m high glazed box, linking the existing Sitting Room and a new kitchen for the house. The structural frame is expressed externally, rising from a blue brick retaining wall. The kitchen and Lounge spaces are much more domestic in scale and the difference in height between the Lounge and the Dining Room allows many perspectives across the space and out into the garden. The remainder of the house has been carefully re-worked using the same themes, resulting in a home which is both more stylish and more convenient than before.
The project won a Scottish Design Awards Commendation in 2002 and has been extensively published in national newspapers and magazines.
