9-11 Horne Terrace, Edinburgh
This development inserts contemporary tenement housing into a tight urban site immediately adjacent to existing neighbouring gables. A single storey industrial unit was demolished allowing the construction of five storeys of residential accommodation providing eleven units in a mix of 1, 2 and 3 bedroom apartments. Having been designed to respond to sensitivities of an established residential community, the external palette of brick and metal cladding relates to the neighbouring stone and slate-roofed tenements.
Taking advantage of the opportunities afforded by immediate proximity to the Union Canal the majority of the apartments have open terraces overlooking the canal, with extensive views across Edinburgh. The development improved the biodiversity and access to an underused area of the canal through sensitive planting and landscaping of the canal bank. A residential mooring for Scottish Canals was also created.
The development was completed in December 2018.
