Centre for Sports and Exercise, University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh
Oberlanders completed the extension of the Centre for Sport and Exercise (CSE) for the University of Edinburgh.
Taking the form of a robust brick cube, befitting the industrial history of the site, the design features a projecting zinc clad section allowing panoramic windows to capture stunning views of Arthur’s Seat. The new build provides around 1900 square metres of additional state-of-the-art sports conditioning and physical activity space, over 3 new levels of gym spaces, a new free weights gym in the vaults beneath the existing building and improved access routes throughout, including extensions to the existing FW1 Olympic gym and FASIC sports injuries clinic.
The facilities have also been designed as performance venues during the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. User feedback included praise from The Springboks and New Zealand All Blacks rugby teams. All blacks Strength and conditioning coach Nick Gill stating: ‘We’re always on the road and this is the best facility we’ve ever had’ whilst Springboks fitness coach Neels Liebel described the facility as ‘top, top, top class’.
