Holyrood North wins 'UK Best Student Residence Halls' at the Property Week Awards 2016.
Delighted to announced that our Holyrood North Student Accommodation Project won ‘UK Best Student Residence Halls” at Property Week Awards 2016.
This ground breaking 950 bed development for the University of Edinburgh offers a varied mix of contemporary accommodation, focused around affordable, residential accommodation targeting international postgraduate and mature undergraduates.
The development successfully bridges community and academia along principal bustling thoroughfares, offering flexible and adaptable accommodation for continued learning, community education and event facilities.
Tweed Valley Mountain Rescue Centre granted Planning Permission
Oberlanders are pleased to announce that Scottish Borders Council have granted planning permission for the Tweed Valley Mountain Rescue Team’s St John Base in Melrose. Alterations to the former fire station will provide an emergency response base, vehicular maintenance facilities and a new teaching and training space.

David Lawson, founding Partner of the practice since 1983, retired on 31st October 2016. Over 33 years David has overseen growth from a small two-man start-up business to today’s award winning and highly successful architectural practice. We thank him sincerely for his guidance and leadership over the years and wish him a long and happy retirement.

healthcare design awards. It has been included in the Building Better
Healthcare Awards 2016 shortlist in the Mental Health Development Category and
most recently it has been included in the Design Excellence Category at
Scottish Health and Social Care Facilities Conference 2016
Place Award for Holyrood North Project.
Our Holyrood North Student Accommodation Project has been presented with a Place Award at the 2016 Scottish Awards for Quality in Planning Ceremony. This is one of the Scottish Government’s most prestigious events to acknowledge achievements in planning. Oberlanders Architects worked in partnership with jmarchitects and HarrisonStevens Landscape Architects to deliver the 1100 bed development for the University of Edinburgh.
'Adamson Bar' in St Andrews gains another accolade.
Oberlanders design project for the 'Adamson Bar' in St Andrews was Highly Commended for the “Cocktail Bar of the Year” in both 2015 and 2016 at the SLTN Awards (Scottish Licence Trade News). The project also won “Best Bar Design” at the Northern Design Awards in 2015.

Mark Coffey becomes Partner.
Marking the continued evolution and growth of the practice, we are delighted to announce that from 1st November 2016 Mark Coffey has been promoted from Associate to Partner. Mark specialises in healthcare design and will focus on leading and managing our extensive portfolio of healthcare projects throughout Scotland and the rest of the UK.
Strengthening our team.
Three of our Senior Architects, Gillian Blackburn, David McNabb and Paul Gilligan have been promoted to Associates, strengthening our teams in the higher education/research, residential/student residential and healthcare sectors respectively. Bernt Cederstorm and Andrew Lee are also promoted to the role of Technical Director, while Mark Pettie becomes a Senior Architect.
We are pleased to announce two key additions to our business support team. Andrew Reid joins as our Finance Manager and Julia Murden joins to oversee our Reception and Marketing activities. Together with Anne Turner, who oversees Quality and Administration duties, we have a very strong and highly experienced business support team to take the business forward.
Practice Manager retires.
Irene Gray has retired from the practice after 23 years as our Practice Manager. Irene was an integral part of the practice team for many years and highly valued by our clients, fellow consultants and staff alike. We are grateful to Irene for her years of loyal and dedicated service to the practice and wish her well for a long and happy retirement.

Oberlanders have two projects shortlisted for the Scottish Government Quality in Planning Awards. The SAQP Awards ‘are one of the Scottish Government’s most prestigious events and acknowledge achievements in planning – ranging from strategic visions to new settlements.’

442 Design receive interior design award for Holyrood North
Phased handovers of Holyrood North for The University of Edinburgh are underway and we are pleased to confirm that Levels Café has just taken top spot in the Interior Design category of the Scottish Design Awards 2016. Congratulations go to 442 Design Ltd who coordinated branding and design of the café and adjacent conference facilities. Levels Café is open to all and looks set to bring together university and community within this extensive regeneration.
Rock UK, Whithaugh Park, Newcastleton, Scottish Borders
Oberlanders have been selected as preferred bidder for a major redevelopment at Whithaugh Park in Newcastleton for Rock UK. The site provides outdoor activity holidays for young people. The commission will involve the establishment of a development masterplan for the site and proposals for replacing the existing log cabin accommodation.
Tweed Valley Mountain Rescue Team, Melrose, Scottish Borders
Oberlanders are delighted to be working with TVMRT on the redevelopment of the former Melrose Fire Station to create a new team headquarters and training facility. Oberlanders are providing Architectural and CDM Principal Designer services for this important community project.
The Foundry Cast Iron Restoration.
Oberlanders are working with Glasgow Museums Resource Centre to restore and reuse cast iron Cornices salvaged from the historically significant Sun Foundry in Glasgow. In its heyday the foundry’s global exports included decorative cast iron for institutions and banking halls throughout the empire. Damaged Cornice pieces were recovered from the foundry site by GMRC and will be integrated into the student accommodation development to serve as a lasting memorial to the industry once prevalent throughout Glasgow.
9-11 Horne Terrace Planning Application Lodged
We have submitted updated proposals for 11 Canal side apartments, on behalf of AMA New Town Ltd, on the site of a redundant industrial unit at Horne Terrace, Edinburgh.

Oberlanders have been appointed as part of the GRAHAM Construction PSCP team to deliver a phased refurbishment of the Davidson and West Medical Buildings. The project will create new and refurbished clinical research laboratories as well as break out and study space within a complex of existing listed buildings for the University of Glasgow Medical School.

NHS Monklands Phase 1 Handed Over
Phase 1 of this £19 million project, a new ICU has been handed over to NHS Lanarkshire in March 2016 and will receive its first patients on 5 April 2016.

The Foundry Progressing On Site at Kennedy Street
Work rapidly progressing on the site of our Kennedy Street Student Accommodation development in Glasgow on behalf of Balfour Beatty. Ground floor slab poured with brick and blockwork starting to take shape.
Oberlanders Achieve URS UKAS accreditation
United Registrar of Systems (URS), United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) accreditation has been obtained for both Architecture and Principal Designer under our ISO 9001, 14001 and 18001 certification.
Schuh – Germany
2015 saw our first stores for Schuh completed in Germany. Working closely with Schuh’s store development team and our German shopfitters the first 2 stores were completed in Centro Oberhausen (Germany’s largest mall) and the nearby Ruhr Park centre. We’re already working on proposals for the next store for another city centre location in the region for opening mid 2016.
Schuh Continues to Expand
2015 was another busy year for our retail team with Schuh, completing 13 store fit-outs across 3 countries, with their new 2015 store fit-out concept rolled out to the majority of these. New stores were created in Coventry, Oberhausen, Hastings, Ruhr Park (Bochum), Hounslow, Dundee and Leeds, Schuh kids stores in Belfast, Leeds and Metro Centre, along with major refits to the Swansea and Sunderland stores and their Irish flagship store in Dublin’s O’Connell St.
