Oberlanders Architects began in 1983 when David Lawson joined Jack Oberlander to establish Oberlander Associates. Jack and David’s first joint commission was the award winning, £1.6m, St Andrew’s Hospice & Convent in Airdrie, Lanarkshire.
New commissions quickly followed including several major projects in the Bio-technology Sector, for Heriot-Watt and Edinburgh Universities. In 1989 the Practice won an 11,000 sq m, £16.5m, Research Laboratory on the Heriot- Watt University Research Park for Syntex Research Scotland, an American Pharmaceutical Company based in Palo Alto, California. These projects established the Practice’s reputation for successfully handling complex high value contracts. Ian Low, who had joined the Practice in 1983, was appointed as a Partner in 1986 and helped establish Oberlanders’ reputation and experience in the Health Care Sector.
